Lessons and Carols

Christ Covenant Church is a young, steadily-growing church in the Chicago suburbs. For the last fifteen years, they have conducted a traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols for the congregation and surrounding community.

We have had the pleasure of creating custom artwork for the 2019 and 2022 events. Our goal was to establish a reverent visual language that complemented and aided both the carols and the scriptures.

Anno Domini 2022

We took a painterly approach to the 2022 cover art. The scene depicts the Star of Bethlehem resting over the house where the Lord and his earthly parents dwelt.

We designed custom type treatments for the program cover and invitation intended to bring to mind ancient illuminated manuscript calligraphy while maintaining a contemporary freshness.

“Our church has greatly benefited from the artwork created by VRTCL. They have added beauty and reverence to the printed materials we use during the Christmas season.”

- Jon Herr, Pastor

Anno Domini 2019

The artwork visually represents the Festival of Lessons and Carols as a “window” through which to peer back through the arc of history, journeying from Genesis to the advent of Christ.

Since the event takes place during Advent and looks toward Christmas, we used a limited color palette, centered on blue, the color liturgically associated with Advent.

Our work included a printed invitation, program cover, and banner for the Facebook page.
